Monthly meetings are open to the public and feature a guest speaker and recent area finds.

7:00 PM on the last Thursday of the month, March through November.

The US Forest Service building.
It is located at 160 Zillicoa Street, Asheville, NC 28801.

Foray in Madison County

The Madison County foray on August 5, 2017 had 16 participants, including the leaders, Laurie Jaegers and Frank Bartucca. Two generous property owners allowed the Asheville Mushroom Club access to their lands in Shelton Laurel, and a generous third owner also stepped up to allow us crossing rights to some nearby National Forest.

The foray split into two groups: one along a network of lush trails in some relatively young mixed woods that began along a ridgetop and eventually descended, led by Laurie Jaegers. Frank Bartucca led the other group, which traversed some local farmland until reaching nearby National Forest lands. Those were largely acid cove forest with large amounts of rhododendron.

On the day of the foray, the area was cooler. The high temperature of the day was in the low 70s. The weather for the previous week was hot and dry, except for rainfall the previous evening.

After foraying, we ate lunch and set up our identification work at three tables, which Colleen Rockstroh and Patrick Ober transported to the site. Charlotte Caplan led the identification process. She was assisted by Laurie Jaegers, Frank Bartucca and Dan Manning.

The Madison County foray yielded 59 species, significantly lower than the previous year. Full marks to Frank for teasing out the identity of a Milk Cap new to the club: Lactarius caeruleitinctus.
