Morchella punctipes

Half-free morels, Morchella punctipes, aka M. semilibera, resemble black morels until you notice that the completely hollow stalk is attached part-way, but not all the way, up inside the head section. Ridgetops may show patchy blackening. This is another species associated with hardwoods and is common in some years. Half-free morels are edible but not as tasty as other species.
